all was going swimmingly until I hit a complete block in SW corner. Hours pulling teeth - then I got 20 (which is a trifle dubious, I feel - though the original solution is clear).
Very clever work and typically devious clueing, Hamish! (but thank Mr Berners-Lee for anagram solvers!)

23. Original answer is two letter abbreviation for lawyer then six letter word for calls abandoning ‘no’.

Good fun, took me far too long to work out 28A/22D though!

Thanks to Soup, that was most enjoyable. I seemed to have had a different experience to others, in that, I was able to write in the bottom half fairly quickly and it was the top half that proved difficult.

APP, it's always good to give the clue - not everyone sees the puzzle, and yet people still like to help, try to help.

NB. This is a thematic puzzle, the entry for every answer is anagrammed before being put in the grid.
Going round Champagne City, having drink is more stimulating (8)

A very standard, usual in crosswords, drink, goes inside('having) a famous French champagne city (which has beem reversed, 'going round').

I may be wrong, but I see two possible anagrams for the solution to26 down. both have the same crossers and differ only in the non-crossing vowels.
Any hints as to which one should be entered?

That doesn’t sound quite right. There is only one anagram that works in 26d and only one of the unchecked lights is a vowel.

Hi jhgentleman

Are you sure that you have the crossing solutions correct? For me, one of them leads to a vowel in the crossing position.
