The 'papers' is a slightly crosswordy word for newspapers. There's the usual 'run out' inside a four-letter 'run', verb (in your hosiery perhaps). Setback is really set back...

A small addition to Malone’s helpful hint. The word for “papers” would probably be the word of choice for a Private Eye or Viz crossword.

No, Jack, there was no intention to rebuke you. I think the two hinting parts seemed big enough on their own, when I added the other (re Private Eye and Viz), I felt I was dolloping out too much! I've underhinted in the past, so was concerned I was heading into overhinting territory.

Finished last night. Thanks for the hints and support and particular thanks for the grid.

For those still struggling. It's only 6 days into the month so there's still plenty of time left, even if you're using the same kangaroo petrol that I had in my tank.

It's now 19 days into the month and I was running on fumes! Thanks to you for your query @27 and jono's reply which helped me crack 22 which in turn gave me 28 (tried 1, 2 and 3 letters for the river... should have pesevered!
This seemed like a walk in the park initially but having incorrect checked letters in the grid for some clues made it tough to solve the more obscure clues.
