Got it, thanks Rogissimo, the "in a" threw me - not that it takes much these days 😥

That was much better, last weeks took me all week. This one just 50 minutes after I twigged 14 then 23. Wondering if my 15 is correct - often a painting style.

chrise@11:

I figured (without seeing either play or film, but I recall 1980s-era advertisements for both) there would be a (social) class difference between the Actor and the Dresser, reflected in their respective speech. The included slang term being an example. Geting found a citation. I'm too lazy to look for Youtube clips. ;-)

Brendan - entirely agree about 3D. 'in a' just doesn't work properly in the clue. The homophone is pretty loose, too - personally, I pronounce the 't' in the answer.

Regarding the earlier discussion on the use of “as’ll” in 7d and the possibility of a reference to a line from the film, I dropped Alan Connor a note and here is his unedited response…

“Haha, good question! Well, the clue started with something much less abbreviated as the join and then I needed to see whether the system was accepting changes so needed to make an arbitrary tweak to a clue and chose Everyman as the guinea pig and that clue almost at random. For the specificity of the backstageness — it felt not out of place though if that line influenced the choice, it was on a subconscious level!

(Do share if worth it and I’ll check in of course when I can)

V best
A”

So not intended but perhaps subconscious.

Thanks, jono (and Alan indirectly).

Funny thing. After missing the acrostic in last week's Prize (Soup), I went to the other extreme and "found" a phantom subtlety. 🤣

Well that was enjoyable - especially after yesterday's Prize which I'm struggling with.
Couldn't see the device Jono's referring to (except for the alliterations).
COD 25A which made me LOL, literally.
Hope everyone's well.
(It's still summer here on South Devon)

Hi Barry, yes, I was referring to the alliterations. With this grid you can expect the long 1a, the central down clue and the long bottom clue to all be alliterative.

Nice fun challenge today. Annoyed with myself for not registering the alliteration sooner as it would've helped with 25. That one took me a while as it's not a phrase I've heard but it does make sense. Still not sure about 15a, I have an answer that works for 2/3 of the clue but that's not really enough although nothing else fits

Nick. 15a was my last one. Not a word I knew bit given how obvious the clue is, you've likely got the right answer.

Excellent Everyman all round. Bit easy. Bit tough but generally a good Sunday workout.
