Sorry for adding to the confusion. Phil1000 is, of course, correct.

You’re right Phil10000, that’s exactly what I’ve done! Obviously marbles dropping all over the place today!
Anyway, thanks to all of you for helping - I’ve finished and can now out in the sunshine!
Have a great day

For me this was just the right level that I like in an everyman. Not a write in, but able to finish it in a few hours, rather than a few days. Thank you to Phil10000 & Jono for the hint on 3a.

Cod 25a as I do like a good maths based clue ;-)

Hi Imci @ 21,

me too I still don't see why the answer starts with an R rather than a D.

Hi Simon,

4d - If the answer began with D then the definition would have to be "1" but that "1" also forms part of the wordplay and answer, plus that word is archaic, in fact I'd never heard it before, so that would have been alluded to in the clue. Also, "tells" would serve no purpose in the clue.

If I've got it right, it's 3 letter "might be Des" ('des' being the last second word of a 6 letter 2 word term (3,3) meaning 'desirable housing', and that goes around 4 letter "1" (literally the answer to 1a) - definition is then "tells"

....sorry, "des" is the first word of a 6 letter 2 word term (3,3) meaning 'desirable property/housing'.

Brendan, agree, that’s exactly how I saw it.

Hi Brendan

Many thanks for taking the time to explain, the 3,3 term never entered my head and I ignored the "what might be" part of the clue which gives the R__

in my defence check out the link below, my answer does fit with the definition "tells"

Thanks Simon, I saw "pass on" in Chambers and immediately associated it with 'to die' or "late" but, on checking the BRB again, I see the next definition is "to publish" so and you're absolutely right I stand corrected:-)

Thanks Jono, I've made a few howlers lately so it was a relief to see you parsed it the same way.

Hi all, if anyone is still there. For various reasons, I only got around to doing the Everyman today and I'm stumped on my last one; 26a. I have
?S?E. Any hints gratefully received.

Thanks for the explanation of 4d which I simply biffed, and had no idea about the parsing. I thought the 'des' part was a bit tenuous!

Other than those two, I thoroughly enjoyed this and agree with others about 3,10 and 11 across. All brilliant clues.
