whistler

Well I finally spotted the description and phrase (obscured by one plausible but incorrect correction). Despite no knowledge or interest in the original subject I was able to identify the name and intuit the alteration. All very satisfying and just as a Listener should be. I'm pretty sure I have the three normal clues and have had a go at applying the phrase (clever!) But can only get a 10 letter vaguely plausible answer. Is specialist knowledge of the apparent subject necessary at this end stage? Thanks all?

No, the final stages are not related to the puzzles apparent 'theme'.

whistler, apology for late response to your post, and I expect you've sorted everything by now, but if not......Your 11-letter name takes 6 alterations to arrive at another thematic term (7,7).
Try writing the answers to the three normal clues in clue order in a straight line. Bearing in mind the quotation, I am sure you will see the name of a group appear.
Hope this is not giving too much away but also helpful.

Unstuck, Thank you, once again for your encouragement and help. As always, I suspect that the instructions are not working for me because I am applying them to the wrong thing! I shall go over my misprints again to see if I have got the right 'normal' clues. Just another knot to be teased apart! I think I will get there on this one.

Recently started playing VR golf via a Meta Quest 3 headset (great fun but anything like a birdie few and far between!)

Enjoyed this, though I needed a little help from this forum to nudge me over the line (choosing a different misprint for 8A didn't help). Some of the clues did stretch things a bit, but given the constraints of making every clue thematic I can cut Seps some slack.

And the final endgame featured a favourite group. Excellent.

When I say 8A, I mean 38A.

All done, thanks to hints here for 34ac and 38ac. As with others, I have mixed feelings. I suspect that definition misprint is in general trickier to set and solve than wordplay misprint or missing/extra letter. Combined with shoe-horning in the surface theme, this made for some very tenuous clues. But praise where due: the description and phrase could be identified early, helping with the solving. And the endgame could also be completed early, giving yet more hints to an incomplete grid.

The clubhouse is deserted and the green jacket ceremony long finished, but belated thanks to the setter for an enjoyable puzzle - and clever title too.

And of course always great to have an excuse to revisit the group...
