mattrom, although I am often wrong, I believe the type of food synonym is not the one you are thinking. If it helps, the correct synonym is 6 letters long. The one you think it is relates to a 4 letter entry.

mattrom, what I meant was that the synonym used for the type of food is also 6 letters long, and the 3 letter synonym that you thought is was relates to a four letter entry. BTW, unbelievably for me, I just found the 7 letter word to be highlighted after only 10 minutes grid staring. Joy of joys!

In that case, I'm stumped, as my other pairs seem to fit. Thanks, Gitto, I'll have another look at it tomorrow.

I have almost filled the grid, but still quite a few things I don't understand about this puzzle!
3d, I have two words that fit. Maybe there are more endings.
I can't parse it at all, apart from a vague definition, - the first two or three words? My crossers at the lower end of the word are a problem!
Also stumped on 27d. And how to end 10d. Thanks.

3d - Definition is first three words with the first having a deletion.

27d - 4 letter outwit plus 2 letter smart response

10d - Has a word removed

Thanks, Didgepot and Gitto, finally sorted. I'm accustomed to the 29a. word meaning the opposite of what it does in this case.
