I owe you an apology, Bodhere. I trusted to memory (bad idea at my age!) and gave you a hint for 28a not 29. Mea culpa!

I’m almost finished but have a conflict between 26D and 36A which I can’t resolve. I have an answer for 26D but I can’t parse it, and I have an answer for 36A but am not convinced it fits the definition. Their crossing letter clashes. Can anyone assist please?

Pootle, the second letter of 36a is not T. If you look up the common three-letter word in the middle of 26d, you should find a suitable definition in there if you have the right answer.

Hard to know exactly but I reckon your down answer is correct and look down the list of definitions of Chambers for the three letter central bit

The across is defined precisely in Chambers so you may have it wrong - the first word is defined by the first word once the extra letter has gone

The theme word was new to me, and I found some of the examples quite amusing.
Annoyingly, I'm left with one pair of words which don't seem to gel. The extra word I have could be a synonym for a prison or toilet, relating to a grid entry for a type food. Am I on the wrong track?
