Thank you, dodgepot. That seems rather a mean trick! I’ll get back to it after a break.

And I forgot to say - What a clever construction! Very enjoyable in hindsight!

Just finished, thought this was excellent again. We've had some very fine puzzles in the last few weeks.

Just started on this one (a bit later than usual). Solved 1a and 2d (and a few more) but wherever you start 1a on row one I can't see how it can dovetail with 2d. The first letter of 2d simply doesn't appear in 1a. What am I missing?

If 2d does not dovetail with anything in row 1, then logically it must begin in a different row,

I have only eight un-solved clues ( 3, 11, 18, 20, 26 and 28 across: 27 and 30 down) and yet I cannot sort out the grid-fill. Despite Cockie's hint at # 64 and several others in this thread, nothing I have tried works. I think I will throw the towel in, especially as 4793 will be posted shortly.

If you have the six normal clues you can identify the likely rows on which the 3x3 area sits. You also have down clues which need modification so do not have extra spaces which must traverse these rows alongside the square - 8 and 12 for example. Play around with these and it might get you started. Then work out from there.

Thanks again Smithsax. Your hint was perfect. It kick-started the grid-fill for me and I have now completed what was a truly brilliant puzzle.
