The theme...

Requests with help towards the theme may also be made here. The help given should be at the gentler end of the scale - just a nudge, a pointer in the right direction, and definitely not anything that would spoil the puzzle for others. Any posts which, even inadvertently, reveal too much of the theme are likely to be removed.

Early days, but looking very tricky. I wonder whether the 13 decoy extra letters spell something?

They spell the name of a ‘decoy’ (5, 8). Cracking puzzle so far. I have a clear vision of what is needed for the endgame but still plenty of gridding to get done first…

Yes, very tough but a classic of the genre (the names being switched in the 9 extras didn't help).

Tough, and very daunting until the grid started to fall into place. Very satisfying.

Daunting! Cold solving again.
Could anyone point out some more easily-solved clues?
After a few hours I only have 11 17 29a and 12 and 25d.

I have got 22, 24ac, and 18,19d, all of which I thought were quite reasonable, but all involving removing letters or words

Hi Dylan - I think you have 22a in the wrong category of clue.

12d - First 3 words are the def (misprint in one) a 5 letter synonym for ?????
