Given the hype about this subject in one of the papers recently I ought to have guessed what was coming from the shape of the grid. But I didn't, and the PDM was - not shocking, but delightful. Despite having all the clues bar one solved and inserted by midnight I remain completely baffled by 15. I know where it must go, but nothing makes sense. Does this mean that everything else is wrong? Anyone willing to provide a hint?

15 becomes clear after ''creating new words'' (although it appears to be out of place initially).

This is becoming rather annoying!! Having cold solved 19 clues I still don't have a clue as to how to start filling the grid - a hint at 1a across may be helpful.

1a - The first synonym ('Expressed inquiry') is an odd looking but justified 4 letter word. Inside it is the 'abyss' (3 letters) + an abbreviation.
I had to work from the bottom up to fill the grid - once the theme has been spotted some information in the grid is very helpful in this respect.
