What I meant was 4 unknown letters, of which 2 or 3 are unches, in a letter word.

I'm way behind you gitto, but guessing the quotation will sort out the unchecked letters? I am still perplexed by what to anagram in 2dn if anyone can throw me a further crumb.

Lumen, anagrind of usual abbreviation of "in" and detailed sciency and thing ( 1 + 6 + 5 = 12).

I'm struggling with some of the partial w/play, even when I have the whole answer

So I am now assuming that the sum of the answers with the extra words is 61+

And also thought if we lose the y from sciency, why not just use science..

Good evening all, I see I am in good company in finding this one a challenge. I am trying to find these 'characters' and am really struggling to get anything that makes sense - is another language involved? Try as I might I can't fathom the change in 12ac, is it the fourth word that's involved? Any nudge would be appreciated. Thanks.

yes, it's the fourth word in 12 and no, another language is not involved. It may be helpful to realize that in the two "threads", either the original letter or the new letter might be used - ie it's not the case that the original letters form one thread and the changes form another.
