Now that I've got it, it's a runner-up for COD.

I follow the forum for both the Prize and Everyman and very rarely post but I must say without the forum I would've been forever. Still got 5 to do but hated 8 down. COD 13A once I had my light bulb moment.

I've read through the forum and I've still got a few to go.
For my, 13A was FOI (first one in?) which I got immediately but I'm struggling with others.
Is there any way that I could find a reference to 8D; I see that many others here have never heard of it so a pointer to an example of its use would be helpful.
Differing opinions on Paul for sure and for me, he's a mixed bag: lots of clever parseable clues but too many that don't seem fair to me.
I'm not actually a great admirer of any of the setters, as all seem to mix good clues with bad clues, but nevertheless I enjoy this weekly challenge.
Someone posted what looks like the solution to 17A (surely not allowed?). Is it, or it is just a hint?

Typically I found 8D after posting as soon I as looked up what I'd guessed it could be all along, but I don't like 'scum' to mean what it does. Maybe it depends on where in the UK you were brought up?

No, sorry, nobody posted the solution to 17A, I misread something.

A bit late I know but the def is Big gun - a conceited or haughty person

For 8d I had to resort to Google , definition is big gun but I have never come across the phrase before. Think big boss not gun!

I know my 9a is correct but despite hint earlier on still not sure of parsing.

Oh I really enjoyed this, some clues took ages to click but so satisfying when you get them. I didn't find it insanely hard but I did take someone's advice to just Google 8d. Never heard of it! Getting 13 early on helped

Now down to two 22ac and 23d. Any clues please.
