It told me to move them down, not necessarily by two letters. Why does it have to be that prescriptive?

In the "YMMV" category, I mentioned far upthread that 24 was my COD. 🤣
But I've never been accused of having good taste.

It doesn't make it a poor clue just because people cannot parse it, you know 😊

chrise. I solved it. I didn’t have a list of thematics. Ergo it was possible to solve without a list of thematics. Ergo it was not (and in my view was far from being) a poor puzzle.

Well I've finished - sort of. Several I didn't know and the google list of theme words I used proved to be deficient. Several I couldn't parse including 2ac, 30ac, 7d, 13d, 19d (not fully), 26d, 28d and 29d. I expect my friend in Sheffield will put me right tomorrow.

I seem to have ended up with 11 theme words, so I guess one isn't a theme word at all.

I'm inclined to agree with Chris, especially about 13d, whose parsing I now understand, but hate.

My FOI was 1d, my LOI was 29d and my COD remained 1d.

Chris it says set COmpany back/down. I am repeating myself now

and company is the usual 2 letters i,e CO

so the solution is acost?
you aren't going to convince me that it's not a poor clue, along with several others of the ones i'd solved before i threw it away.
i think we will h\ve to agree to differ...

...and I didn't catch on to the theme until til I had finished the grid, then most of the 10 I already knew from my dressmaking for GCE way back
