babyjane - maybe your four letter answers aren’t right? The ones which cross with A aren’t the easiest clues imo, one is a word I never use, and the other has a rather cryptic definition.

I wasn't intending to do this, but I seem to have accidentally finished it! Once I tentatively wrote in some answers, the rest became a lot easier.

Anyway, I enjoyed this a lot. Wasn’t going to bother but I’m glad I did. My printer needs more ink too, so thanks to jono for his link. Just what I needed!
Definitely on the hard side, but doable. Had more fun than I thought I would fitting them in. COD is Y. I got it quite early on, so that encouraged me to persevere.

That's how every alphabetic jigsaw puzzle I've ever attempted works, so I assumed it was the case here. Although now I see that the special instructions aren't worded the same, so there is a possible alternative interpretation.

I found that one an absolute stinker, mainly because I couldn't parse half the clues, and in this format of puzzle you need to be 100% certain of most of the answers before you can start filling in the grid.

Sometimes I really like Paul. But not today.

I found this to be very difficult.
I have answers which fit, but the parsing evades me on
C,D,S,X, so will have a break for lunch methinks 🤔

Hi jazzy
I can see the sailor in the C, but not the rest.
D take 2 letters from a French author
S is misleading as you need a singular rather than plural for the first sponge.
X is a reversed animal, then "unsigned". Not a word I knew.

Found this relatively straightforward once I placed the 15 letter clue on the right which immediately meant a fair few others could go in.
FO solved Y
LO solved Z
COD W and Y made me smile.
