Granama1, grip is used as a "container", i.e. there is an obvious abbreviation within the (thematic) answer - not in the entry.

@gitto. Thanks. My error was using a common, modern spelling of the answer.

I'm not sure why some see a problem with the first part of 22d. It's fully supported by Chambers if one looks, contrary to what some have said.

I've had full grid for 24hrs and know the theme, but can't tackle the end game at all. Stared all day, with an hour off to do the IQ. Presumably the 'phrase' and the two names don't appear in the same column.
I can see a column that contains a 12 letter relevant hyphenated word, except one letter needs to change....but that doesn't seem to fit with the instructions.
If there's no obscure way to help, I'm happy to wait a few more days.

Are you sure a letter must be changed - you may have a wrong entry (there are two ways to spell it, of course).

Lumen.. Are you sure about the one letter change required? If it is the same assumption I made, it proved worthwhile checking my spelling
