You got me thinking, candledave, so I looked in the BRB and it gives an' as a possibility for and. Add that to ale and G for German, shake it about and look what appears!

Not chiming with this one much. I have 4 of the 5 pairs but have things like 33d (....) where I think I have all the letters (from the crossers) but can't see why the result is relevant.

A hint at 21a (Criminal undertaking....etc) would give me a complete grid. I have an idea that fits the theme but...

33d is another of my quibbles, granama1 - the 'title' isn't as precise as I'd have liked, given the person used to justify it (and the one word definition isn't given in Chambers). But I'm sure yyou've got the right answer.
