A tip for 36d would be great for me - to finish that horrible corner!

Thanks drxx. I see 33d now (it's a bit American to me) and yup, the parsing is fair I suppose but a bit hmm.

I see the parsing for 21a too now thanks. I had the right idea but got stuck thinking about 'cobber' as an Australian companion.

Just got to find the pairs to swap now. I've spotted a likely candidate for the final thematic word. I think I'll park it until tomorrow.

Lumen, I think the 'appeal' is as in 'the xx girl' surrounded by a couple of abbreviations. (I thought paralegal was a bit superfluous).

Still struggling with 1d, where like Lumen I have ???i?s.
Also, is 16ac in Chambers? I can’t find any word that fits my final four letters

Now I'm confused, isn't paralegal the definition? Which clue does 'knows' belong to?
Why are the fish huge in 40a? I think I may have that one incorrect. My headless fish are quite big...but huge seems wrong.

16ac is a proper name and not in Chambers. The same applies to 1d.

Dylan, 1d is thematic. So the answer is different to the entry.

lumen, the "paralegal" is merely indicating that it is only in a legal sense that the answer means "knows".
