Found this very hard. I liked the end game, which I thought was clever and satisfying - but I agree with Drxx at #4 that some of the clues are close to unfair. Eg, I feel 4D and 20A are close to indirect anagrams unless I've misunderstood them. Can't parse some of the clues fully, although I'm comfortable with the full grid. Still. it was a challenge I enjoyed.

4D and 20A are both a straightforward def + charade clues. Nothing indirect about them.

I don't understand the wordplay to 39A, however.

Other than that, I think the rest of the clues are fine.

buzzb, look at letters in "these handy containers", spaced apart appropriately and then anagrammed.

I think an element of diffliculty is added by these double clues, in that it only becomes clear with time where to make one's little pencil mark separating the two parts of the clue.

Anyway, all finished, fair-copied, enveloped ready to be posted tomorrow.

By the way, there's no anagrammatic element to 4d. It's four discrete bits of wordplay assembled to form the solution.

4D is indeed fine. I intended to say '24D' in my earlier post. Sorry for silly typo. I still think 24D is a stretch, but won't argue further!

Thanks

1d is in the clue, dylan and the cardinal is a number in 12a ('abruptly' is also a noise).

Thanks drxx, but what I suspect you’re saying for 1d would clash with 15ac, which I’m very confident of. Have I missed something?

Yes, jbird54 - shortened versions and abbreviations (eg 20a) for words given in the anagram fodder should remain intact and in place, not spread around (I think).
I'm not keen on the anagram indicator at 6d - not sure Chambers justifies it (or the definition at 33d - that would be 2 words, I think).
I have a few more quibbles, but they're just that (and I think it's an enjoyable, well constructed puzzle for all that).
