Naughty! But does resolve both problems, now I need to try to understand the 7&8 letter clues,

Got the final words and the poem. Now more confused than before I got those!!!

Currently just missing 16ac and 8dn, where I suspect one of these two (most likely 16ac) is shorter than the given space.

No idea on the names, but I'll probably need to neaten up the scruffy writing to find them.

16ac is shorter and a single word definition in 8d.

Now to figure out this endgame -- I can see two candidate names, but I find it surprising that they'd be part of the relevant five...

Another Saturday spent grid staring which is extremely annoying. As I have assumed "mutilated" means that the 5 names are treated in a similar fashion as to how the material removed from the 7&8 letter clues has been used, and that "in a row" refers to across entries, I can only find 2 names. Am I barking (up the wrong tree)?

16ac - 2 abbreviations, one normal for temp and one from latin.
