The theme..
Requests may be made here for help with the theme. 'Help' should be a nudge or a pointer in the right direction, not anything that would spoil the puzzle for others. It may be tricky to get the balance right, but it's worth trying! Any queries or replies which - even inadvertently - reveal too much of the theme are likely to be removed.
Early finishers should remember that many solvers don't see the puzzle until Saturday.

The Listener is a unique puzzle and should be treated with respect.

Still reeling from Cagey's little bundle of fun - as has been pointed out, the LWO essay is almost as hard to get your head round as 4775 was. Nice to have an easier outing today, though 3 of the "five people" are pretty obscure. Thanks, Ifor.

Just wanted to comment on 4778 which I found to be a joyous celebration of everything “Listener”. Please would anyone who is a non-submitter, reconsider their stance for just one week and in recognition of everything that “The Listener” is honour the institution which gives them so much by making a submission (of 4778) just this once.

I was thinking of doing just that, jarsseven, even though I am in the US. No idea if it would even get there in time though.

I wouldn't call this easy, I think it's well constructed and quite involved (and it employs a very novel idea for generating the theme) thanks Ifor.

You have the better of me, drxx. It wasn't until I saw your comment above that I thought of googling all 5 names, and the penny dropped. But were you aware that they belong to another category (vaguely relevant to the theme) of which two are very famous and the other three are, as I suggested, obscure. Was this intended by Ifor, I wonder.

No, cockie, but I hope to hear more from you about the other connection... later (it's a bit soon to ask for more right now, but I'm intrigued}.

I currently have two big problems. A gentle hint towards 38 ac may resolve both at the same time.
