17 - 2nd and 3rd letters are thematic, with a word meaning finers points backwards around them

Just spent an hour reading all the across clues - even got some - but no idea what the theme is yet. As usual with Maskarade, the clues are probably not too difficult, but I'm not in the mood for this today. I guess the theme words must be very short to fit in here.

Let's try the down clues and I'll be back later.

Bradford's is a book of lists I believe.

Yes, it’s a crossword dictionary with many things including a list of the theme words here. In fact it wasn’t needed that much as I think if you live in the UK you will know most of these.

I can tell you, Roof, that two of the theme are in your part of the world, one in particular!

All done but a fair few that I can't parse.
