The penny has just dropped ChrisE. Geeker was spot on with this. Parsing some of these solutions is taking longer than solving them.

Castafiore, you're correct on 24. The letter substitition is indicated by "e...y not OK", with an abbrev. implied for "e...y".

…and perhaps read the apostrophe ess as “has” and it makes a bit more sense

All done in record time for me, except for the parsing of 8D. The first three letters seem to come from the first word of the clue but I can't see any more connections.

Three letters petition, one letter zone, two letters around, then three first letters…

I don't know. I struggled with this mainly due to my gk not being good enough and my vocabulary being a bit limited. Which I guess is not Pangakupu's fault but I wasn't bowled over by any of the clues. Some were just incredibly complex.

I like the Saturday prize to be a challenge but this wasn't really my cup of tea. Thanks for all contributions here as I wouldn't have made it otherwise.
