I also found this tricky. I notice the name of another Guardian setter appears in the grid and there are several cryptic/compiler/setter references in the clues, but I’m not seeing enough to constitute a theme.

The FT today has reprinted an old Roger Squires (Rufus/Dante) puzzle and is carrying an obituary in the paper.

4a is my favourite so far. it starts with a computer image format. nicely concealed definition. can't say more without spoiling.4d is scarcely fair - you need to know a female singer from the 90s.

23d two single letters in a two letter word referring to the Guardian, capitalisation of Telegraph is misleading!

25a is a single replacement, husband for black, defn is tie

Well this is a struggle! Nearly completed North but 2d is holding out. Is any knowledge of German language required? And assuming the def is the final word is it meant literally or figuratively?

i can't see where the last 7 letters of 18,19 come from
also i can't see where letters 5-9 of 24a come from
