I remember. I saw Ken when I was working on a joint research project with the old firm in 2005/2006 in the pub one lunchtime outside the gates. Off back home to Aus tomorrow. I miss those collaborations on The Listener.

Indeed ! Ken was my mentor, both as a stressman and a cruciverbalist. I stayed in touch with him for years and I miss him greatly.

The Listener Forum isn't the nest of dry grumpy old pedants that some suppose it to be (...well not always..) - I've unexpectedly reconnected with old friends through it when our cover has been accidentally blown - or deduced through comments, as in this case.

Unconnected, but a comparable 60-year connection revealed in 'The Fountain' just received, for those at gets it. Sorry if that's indulgent of me, but the happy glow of old friendship is contagious.

can't for the life of me see the "as few turns as possible" part even though everything else is filled in and we have the extra letters instruction.
Nobody else seems to have a problem with this final input as it doesn't seem to be mentioned much. Am I being thick? Is the "I" in 20A representative of B with a rotating "c" going round it? according to 1D or am I overdoing it. Would love to get this as so close. Help please

Bryan c - I think the least turns piece is just to avoid ambiguity as there are different options to spell out what is required through the circled cells
