Re: earlier posters, and a special shout out to JA #57.

I think the title describes - literally - the first word of 20A - it’s an unusual name, and non-arbitrary. The fourteenth century act is there as a DD.

As per a previous post, I have a nagging feeling that the shape generated by the instruction should be thematic in some way, being thematic for a thematic word, as it were…

Also, as a sort of checksum, it turns out that as per various engineers’ birthdays and tunnel light, this is another of those Listeners that the editors have to book a slot for some time in advance.

Ah yes, thanks, will37. I did do that puzzle, but the names apparently didn't sink in. I will be ready should they ever arise again in a Listener, especially with the connection to Wimbledon, seeing as I am a tennis player and fan.

Quixote (@64), thanks.
I started doing the listener circa 1980 when I was in the Stress Office (no pun intended) at British Aerospace, and that involved many lonely dark nights in the local library. I don't mind doing the research and t'internet, google and wiki have certainly made things easier and much more sociable. I just feared that I had to teach myself something that appeared to be more complex than maths, Greek Latin and Swahili combined - which I thought was rather unfair. Of course once the RIGHT PDM came, those three tools provided everything needed.

Re hw7 #72
Isn’t the “A” in the title an abbreviation of a type of clue (the other being “D”) to describe the traverse of the angry word not just that word in isolation?

Gitto (@75) I also started doing the Listener when in the Stress Office at British Aerospace from 1980 to 1984. First name Tim, and I left to move to Australia. Does that ring a bell?

I'm currently on holiday in the UK and have been doing the crossword for the last few weeks. Brought back a few memories and this one I thought was particularly good in the 'endgame'.

Hi Tim, it's Andy here - I remember those days very well with me, you and Ken struggling all week on them and failing more often than not. I also left in 1984 but returned in 1988, and by that time I was left struggling with them on my own.

I'm stuck on both 16d and 31a and would welcome help please. I can't find any mention of the circles in the grid so wonder if that would give the game away? Thanks
