woodlouse, I am sick and tired of using google to find a squiggle, and I am not willing to learn how to do it. Sometimes the solution involves too much internet and not enough cerebral activity.

Fair enough gitto but think you’re missing out on a fun puzzle.

I assume that I am going to use Google for every puzzle whether that be looking up obsolete English letters, Pascals theorems or capital cities to pick the last three Listeners (that have had solutions published) as examples.

This is no different and needed no more Googling than any of those - everything is set out for you on the relevant wiki page

Stuck on 12D. I know the word to be ignored and I have the 4 checked letters, but only one word in BRB fits and the clue doesn't lead to it.
Not sure how to interpret the message either.

12D def 'digs' noun (dialect) - 3 letters for 'signal' inside 'whisht', the usual short word for silence being slighter longer (last letter repeated) all reversed.

...'whist', not whisht.

i am now going to try and finish this, now that I have the right bloody system. Like Jordan, I now know quite a lot about a Canadian Professor!!1

Added the 2 letters to complete the name, shortened the 7 answers accordingly, changed the 3 letters to get the famous exponent, obviously now got 20ac, carried out the final instruction (4 turns) but now searching for the thematic item - is it 8 letters long, or is that a red herring?
