I think I am home and dry with this one, but a couple of things are causing me doubt. Firstly, there are several alternative ways of highlighting the buried item. I presume any of them would be acceptable. Secondly, I have found an entry wherein three letters could be changed to give the name of the famous exponent. However, one of the new words resulting from the changes is a proper noun and a rather obscure one at that. Does anyone else have the same issues?

think the highlighting in a straight line is probably what’s intended

Proper nouns are fine

Thanks Candledave. I looked for the item to highlight before altering the three letters as I was uncertain about them. However, if one does things in the order they are set out in the preamble, all doubts are removed. Thanks again

Is the second cell of 1d thematic, just a device that Artix was forced into due to the constraints imposed by the thematic material

We were originally distracted by an anagram of the product of the final instruction

Maybe Artix set a trap for idiots like me who found a 1ac whose name is formed by adding a letter each side of the second letter of the 1d CLUE. He had his own system too and having been forced to read extensively on it this morning, I can recommend it to absolutely nobody.

Thanx Artiks

Do I need to learn a squiggle or do the other parts of the instructions resolve that? If it is the former I give up as life is too short. I do not like listeners that rely on specialist knowledge that cannot be resolved within the crossword itself.

Nothing wrong with learning a few new squiggles, if you ask me. Rather that than an online seminar on some obscure maths stuff that assumes you already know it.

Bit harsh, Gitto.

It's only a Google away

All done, but I only partially understand 22ac. I have definition and understand the wordplay for the first 5 letters, but I don't see how the rest of the clue works.

Remove 'or at' from a slang word for 'gut'.
