Hello all. Bit late to the party but I've nearly sorted this one. Struggling with the two adjacent jumbles at 27 and 28. Any help parsing the anagram(?) at 27 in particular would be most welcome. Does the extra letter come out of the first word?

27 conscientious objecter 2 letters
energy 1 letter at end
around ' to seat' (reversed)

apologies that was 26

27 remove 3rd letter of first word

Could anyone help with a steer towards 31 ring clue? I have the other theme words but is this one particularly obscure? Or is it me.
Slow moving garden plant.

@Lumen It's not uncommon in the world of the theme and is a simple one that was often taught in the early days of learning to ..... If you have Bradford's it is one of those listed.

Thanks jazzgirl, is the revised first word the definition? Can't get an anagram to give me 6 letters though.

Lumen - although I do have Bradford's, I didn't use it when looking for the ring words. I just went a-googling around the subject.
