Thank you Schorley
I was convinced that the first 'D' must be Germany and not that 'in Germany' meant that this version of "that is" is from the German language. Trying to get too clever is never worth it!

Can look forward to next week's now.

Can anyone help? I have three cells to go, pertaining to a fish (last letter of the answer) and the ‘marks to screw’ (5 and 8).

Three letter fish surrounding three letter abbreviation for arrived following n. Definition is the first hyphenated word.

Definition is the first four words. Screw is an anagrind.

Thank you; should have seen that anagram given 5/8 done! Still don’t have the fish.

Its a northern dialect name for a pike. You have the first two letters.

Indeed I do, and there are limited options for the third given it has to complete the 7-letter word, but I can’t find proof of the fish.
Thanks again for your help.

To my delight I twigged the PDM immediately. I remember that AZED pulled the same stunt some years ago.

Oompa - I think there’s only one option for the last letter to actually make a word so are you sure about the rest of your letters?

Thanks Candledave, I had decided that was the case and plumped for that letter. However, that leaves me surprised by the 5th letter of the whole word, although it has to be right from the parsing and the intersecting answer. Could be synonyms, but I can’t locate the definition.

oompa - The cross-references in Chambers surrounding near-variations of the word are, I feel, unhelpful. I found the required solution in the dictionary by looking at alternatives beginning with the letter K (although, of course, K doesn't go in the grid).
