Oh, that’s very good. Thanks Dolos.

acornz. - I was just repeating what was in the preamble that answers are entered normally in places to be deduced - not as jumbles or with any missing letters etc

Don’t think it gives anything away but please delete if you’re worried.

May give something say now that it has been commented on!

Candledave, it does not say anywhere in the preamble that answers are entered normally. You have inferred it. That’s why woodlouse asked the question. It says solvers must deduce where in the grid the answers go. Not the same thing at all. So I agree with acornz

That’s what I said: “in places to be deduced”.

I was trying to be helpful nothing more so but apologies if not so Norah, please delete my messages

Candledave hasn't given anything away. Acornz and keepatit, having misinterpreted what he said, are now in danger of giving the game away.

Having said that I have little sympathy for anyone who reads the thread before having a go.

Incorrect, smellyharry. He introduced the word “normally” which is absent from the preamble

I was most interested when I very belatedly read Quixote's comments about last week's puzzle, in particular about 19 down and the visit of the Queen. Was he therefore a pupil at St Paul's School, where speech day was called Apposition, when the Queen visited in 1959? If so, since I was in the third of my five years at the school we must be exact or near contemporaries. I have been doing the Listener crossword for over 60 years (and set it on three occasions). If indeed we are both Old Paulines I'm intrigued to find out who Quixote is, and since it is frowned upon to post names and email addresses on this site perhaps we could use the Old Pauline Club administrator to pass on an appropriate message.

NOTE TO ALL FORUM USERS FOLLOWING THIS THREAD

I am very confused as to whether anything has been given away or not, could someone please explain in simple terms if any thread needs amending.

I’ve had an email saying Posts 3 and 4 give away too much but they look innocent enough to me, I consulted another Forum user on them and that person did not think they gave away more than was said in the Preamble.

However, there seems to be further discussion on whether too much has been given away somewhere so I need help.

As OUR regulars will know, I don’t do crosswords so I have to rely on the information I am given either by email or in the thread itself.

PS - I’ve just deleted Post 17 at Quisling’s request

Apologies to all for the distraction.

There is a (possibly intentional) red herring solution to one of the clues, which I would love to share as it can't really be a spoiler given it is wrong
