I enjoyed this - tricky but not too difficult and a nice twist at the end...

I don't like being made a fool of - except when it's by the Listener Crossword!
Brilliant conclusion to an enjoyable puzzle.

I have a full grid but can't seem to parse "One of Scots breaks leg, whirling for (eg) dances around pole" -- nudges welcome! The definition makes sense and I think I see the first bit of the wordplay but not the rest. (I could be misinterpreting the entire thing, I suppose!)

It's a Scots word for 'one' inside a reversed word for a leg

This was so cleverly contrived that we were many of us concentrating on the usual preoccupations of a carte blanche, best summarised in Jimmy van Heusen's parody of one of his best-known songs: "This is my first affair. Please tell me what goes where." & missed what was staring us in the face if only we would see it

Actually, now I think about it, it was Sammy Kahn who came up with the parody on a Parkinson show
