Turast - it's a map in the sense that the places associated with each omission are in roughly the right place on the appropriate map (bearing in mind the one beginning with W isn't the most famous W).

This was a great puzzle. Thank you. Perhaps the setter hoped it would have appeared a little later in the year!🙂

Finally got there! Taken all week, and beginning to despair until yesterday when the penny dropped.

Wonderful puzzle, loads of thematic elements, some very tricky clues. Particularly loved the resonance between the title and missing word., just lovely.
