now found something confirming the thematic nature of the six items

I now have a full grid, the cycle of 6 in the correct order, removed a letter from one word and changed one in another - therefore have completed what is required - however I still cannot parse 6a or 29a, and if what I have is correct, they each have a redundant letter which are adjacent to each other in the alphabet.

You are correct. .6ac the chips are gambling related. The wordplay all reads backwards. In 29ac the definition is the first word and letters are removed from it to give you the answer. I still haven't got the thematic item(s)

29a is a subtractive anagram of discharged. G (erman) hid and the solution plus extra letter.

mullingar - yes the thematic items were not straightforward (and i needed drxx's help to complete the set.

Some of them i got, simply because the clue made no sense as is.

What kind of help are you looking for?

Am I looking for six different items to go into the clues to give the answers? Is the correct order across then downs? Is the song the relevant text?

mullingar, if you go to the website I indicated earlier - 7,10,13,18,27 (one is a homophone) and the other is in the song.

mullingar - yes 6 different items, which are in the wrong clues, so need switching around (cycle is misleading to me, it seems a bit more random among the 6). the first one i spotted was a (down) clue that needed an anagram indicator and didnt have one.

Now, just dots and map to resolve.
