thanks drxx - i did say "think"! will take another look

As a hint for 1a - the 'first reprinted letter in'... will give you the wrong letter there, but the replacement (again, two words) will give you the right one).

thanks drxx- for some reason i had assumed the items were single word.

A hint to 25a would be very welcome

I'm sure you know what you're looking for, andyp (and most of it is there, so shouldn't be too hard a stare}.

Just started looking at this one and I think I may have the theme and the song from just the first 4 down answers. The string of answers at 4d contain a thematic element that can only refer to one thing to a child of the 70s/80s...
Coupled with the puzzles title, I think this may be the fastest I have stumbled onto a theme.
Now to complete it!

d'oh - yes drxx - overlooked the obvious (although tricked by one of the dots - thinking of its other more common location). thanks for help - one last thing if you wouldnt mind - cannot fathom parsing of 12a...

remove 'up' from what you might be if you've bolted your food (first letter is extra).
