Thanks for confirming 28d drxx - the PDM has just occurred - what a brute of a clue! I now (eventually) have a full grid, just need to sort out 6a,6d,10a and 29a. Still baffled by how the six forming a cycle work.

When you have the six in the correct order you should notice a 6 letter thematic word and this suggests the entry you need to adapt, gitto.

...'adapt'/ the letter to be erased.

AAH! Re-ordering them makes sense!!

Gitto, the so-called cycle of 6 took me longer than the whole of the rest of the puzzle. I found the word 'cycle' didn't help. Perhaps I've got it wrong but the answers I've got seem to work.

In the end I didn't bother with the cycle of 6. There's one entry that transforms very nicely by á la theme by eliminating a letter.

If it isn't that one, I'll be a) surprised and b) disappointed. 😄

it mentions that the "cycle" of six are thematic - but i dont really see it. is there a reference im not aware of (think the theme was a little ahead of my time)

I did the same Granama1 and then worked backwards to the 6 clues.

Andyp - the thematic items are all items discovered by the spots in the early 1970s...

thanks lewap - i suspected that would be the case, but googling isnt revealing much.
