Yes, the six pairs do cross in the grid (I've been wondering about quixote's fundamental problem with the 2nd set for some time).

The other six do cross as well, correct. Seems to me quixote is somewhat overcomplicating this,

The bottom row is quite specific, and doesn't define the full set of six (perhaps this is what quixote has been getting at?) but the preamble is clear that the three pairs are thematic in a different way to the set of four. However, I think the setter has gone to a lot of trouble with this slightly whimsical selection of things that can precede the theme word. Each is a combination of two of a kind that differ in a key respect (this is most obvious in the central pairing, where they're actually the same thing in everything but...). The other two pairs are similar and, for all three pairs, the major partner is the major entry. That's quite a coincidence if it's accidental.
Not that any of this matters, because the set of six is a given - we don't have to do anything with it.
I don't submit my solutions and I wouldn't want to push my version of the endgame - where 'artwork' is being asked for artistic licence should be tolerated (even if it's a Cubist interpretation}.

Well - blow me down!!
The six do//b] cross in the grid! I really had completely failed to spot this and had convinced myself otherwise.
Apologies for all the huffing and puffing.

And I agree with the pairings, although the characteristics shared by each pair have very little - in one case nothing - to do with the theme.

At least three of the varieties paired in the puzzle are not correctly described by the bottom row.

Anyway, none of this appears to affect the outcome; I've made an arbitrary guess at which orientation of artwork gets which treatment in each pair - based on wordsize, right or wrong - with Drxx's appealing 'foregrounding' - and have popped it in the post ,

Drxx. We think you’ve fallen for a scam. Having just spoken to the CEO of DeepMind, he has admitted that Quixote is the name of their latest AI Chatbot that is currently undergoing testing - and obviously fooling some people. Be warned of further conversations that might lead you astray. 🤔😳😇

I knew there was something devious in the way I was drawn into a very (very!) long exchange even after I'd expressed an unwillingness to do so - damn these infernal machines.

Drxx. These latest AI bots are very good. You can hardly tell the difference from a real person. However, sometimes they get stuck in a loop in a loop in a loop in a loop in a loop…
