The saying refers to X in a Y. What we are asked to draw refers to the Y, so surely we need eight pieces of artwork in all - which will overlap. Besides, if the artwork is applied to the four pairs, the result is not what we are familiar with, although monsters do exist in the real world.

Needed a nudge from this forum to get how to pair thematic items, but all done now! Very enjoyable.

I can see how there’s confusion about how many pieces of artwork, it’s not completely unambiguous, but suddenly the most logical is the following. We have four pairs, so to fulfil the saying and respect the pairings, we need four pieces of artwork, one for each pair.

(I know the saying doesn’t show up anywhere explicitly, but it’s too appropriate not to be taken into account, I think)

I think I have a complete grid, including the exterior bits, but for the life of me I can't parse 28dn's wordplay. (I have a word that fits a definition but can't seem to justify it.) Any nudges appreciated!

28dn - I think you need to read from bottom to top: a note and then a 4 letter word for converted dwellings, dropping a letter.

I think the more common expression is 2X in a Y, so agree with 4. I could also justify 8, but I don’t think 1X in a Y necessarily reflects reality, either.

All done, but I can’t figure out how the definition part of 6dn works. Any help?

Louweed, re 6d. Are you applying the correction to the correct part of the word? It's not animals, def. is in Chambers.

Despite ddxx's hint to dim I still can't see how to complete the bottom row. Is it too early to ask fora further nudge?. I have a completed grid and can parse all clues except for 30 down - where does "hold" come in? Ironically, given my species, I struggled with 15 down!

I'd like to battle on with this one tough artwork generally eludes me.

thanks all

ws, in 30d there's a misprint in the 5th word. Have you looked up the answer in the first name list at the back of Chambers?

WS - I gather that you have completed the left-hand column. If so, check out the main subject of that person's work, as Linnaeus might have thought of it and that should complete the bottom row for you.
