I am really struggling with this. I have a full grid but, and it is a big but, I only have 6 of the letters in the LH column and 7 of the misprints in the across clues., nor can I parse 27a,29a or 32a which may, or may not resolve those two issues. I am also concerned that Chambers does not positively confirm a couple (at least) of the definitions I have, particularly 1d and 28d. Finally my misprints aren't really making any sense at the moment. Regardless of all that I shall persevere hoping for some posting magic.

27 - misprint 4th word.
29 - misprint 4th word.
32 'brake' (as a kind of lever) gives an extra letter.

Chambers does confirm 1d (2nd entry).

Thanks drxx, you have confirmed exactly what I thought for 27,29 & 32. For 1d it was the cryptic definition that I couldn't confirm rather than the definition of the answer.

......and for 32 I was using the longer abbreviation - no wonder it was driving me up the wall!!

I have plumped for 8 of the first around 8 of the second as this seems to fit in with (in a way) the title. The bottom row had me perplexed for ages until I did the obvious and looked at the definition of the relevant "pivotal subject" in Chambers - anything other than (simple) English is not my strong point. I too hope that the marking of this is relatively slack as there are several ways of interpreting what is intended.

All done. I went for the 8 in the artwork. A couple of queries and a little niggle.

12a I can see some but not all of the wordplay. I sort of get it but.....

15d I have the answer and the definition but can't see the wordplay.

20d I'm not convinced that the larger part of the solution is synonymous with the relevant part of the clue. I can't see any confirmation in Chambers.

12a - the Jedi has one of its letters in the second half turned

15 - skinning is a container indicator

20d - think both can mean to scold

Thanks, candledave. I hadn't performed the action in 12. Re 20d, I suppose that's the case but I still can't see actual confirmation in Chambers.

It’s in the dictionary for the entry element and also in the thesaurus as a synonym for abuse so close enough for me
