Found this enjoyable but fairly straightforward. Never a fan of clues like 26a where clue and answer have quite so much overlap. Some minor themage in the SE; 24, 27, 21? It’s never themed so just coincidental I guess.

19 could maybe have been “lecture worked on by 28, we’re told…??” 😉

Enjoyed this and smiled at the Spoonerism.

19d I suspect that the "little" is there to mislead us into thinking that flat is an adjective rather than a noun. Well it misled me for a while.

20a The parsing has not yet dawned on me, but will read all your hints after another coffee

Thanks Everyman :)

Just the right level of challenge so that there’s still some Sunday morning left. COD 15a by a mile.
LOI 20a and like others, I cannot parse it.

I was minded to look up the derivation of the expression on which 20a depends, but I’ve yet to find anything convincing.

20a - there is an expression for being happy - “on “ + (5,4). Take out one of the single letter abbreviations for “navy” and add 2 letters that mean “ship”.

Matron has shown the correct parsing.
Usual abbreviation for a (large) boat, I.e. ship, preceded by an expression meaning elation referenced in songs by the Temptations and Bryan Adams, less the initial letter of navy.

Jono on "C**** N***" minus N(avy) + Steamship (abbrev)

Jazz, I wasn’t asking for the parsing, I was wondering about the origin of that expression. I’ve found some references but they don’t really explain convincingly it where it comes from
