despite getting the most likely answer from the definition, and the previous hints I cannot make any headway with the parsing of 14d.
Can anyone help me?

Think of a fictional pirate in a childrens book and change Hot to Cold to give another non-fiction seafarer.

I was slow to start (I blame all the book club Prosecco last night) but then rattled through. FOI 16, LOI 22 and my COD was 15…now to get back to yesterday’s masquerade which will certainly take me the full extended weekend to complete!

Solved in full but had to come to here for the parsing of 4d and 14d.
I still can't see how 14d works . I'm looking at the fourth letter but don't know how changing it to something else would make any difference.
