raggedy the word is in chambers 2016, there is no clash. It's a six-letter sauce, minus its last letter plus the final A (= top grade). There can't be that many possibilities!

As usual found it after posting. First letter of 23 down wrong - I had
a plausible word for 'soldier' - "In feudal England, the calling of the younger vassals for military service; those so called.". Plausible but wrong. Both answers gave 'something one could pick'.

I made hard work of this one. Not helped by being absolutely convinced that the answer to 29 d was light - as in light work and bull’s-eye window. Gave an extra clash which took a while to resolve. Was it a deliberate red herring?
Then I discounted the only possible pair of changed entries which could describe a theme. I really should have googled them.
Got there in the end and have to say it was a great challenge.
It seems the Listeners have been a bit trickier in recent weeks.

Playing catch-up after family events. All done except for the NW illustration. I have a suitable closed line for the thematic word but still don’t see the associated item. Nudge welcomed!

Hiya!

I can't really get into this one, as the endgame sounds like hell to me, but I've been plodding through the grid fill, anyway, and making unnecessarily hard work of it. It took me about three years to parse 18D, because I didn't bother looking up something totally obvious in Chambers - and even longer to parse 12A because I was trying to parse it with an 'F' in it. My mind seems to be elsewhere this week,

Anyways, I've ground to a halt in my one uncompleted quad (which I'm hoping has one or two clashes in it) and would love a hint to 37A. I'm assuming that it's first two words def, then 'indeed' in 'reformer' but nothing is coming to mind and I'm getting fed up.

Thanks,
Suzannah x

suzannahj you're right, the definition is the first two words, a generic word, not an actual name (like Amati, say):
indeed is an abbreviation inside (the actual name of) a six-letter reformer (in a wider sense). That's about all I can give away. And yes, clashes in this quad

Many thanks, DSC. I shall now have a ponder on this in the bath...
