Is it me, or is there something unconvincing about the syntax of 38? I would expect either the first and last words to be transposed, or to see 'is' in place of 'in'.

Candledave, many thanks for that. I think I may have the extra words in the NE, SW and SE quadrants, but I am now doubting my previous solution for the NW quadrant. My diagram within a diagram seemed a very neat solution, but it does not fit in the same way as the other three.

As so often happens I am baffled by the endgame after doing all the hard work solving the clues. If it is not giving too much away could someone be very kind and confirm the relevant column as column 10?
Any further hints after that would be most welcome!

Candledave, as so often happens, no sooner had I posted (twice for reasons unknown to me) than I realised that my diagram within a diagram in the NW quadrant does not work because it is to the wrong scale. Correcting this error makes everything okay. As others have said on this thread, Shark is to be congratulated upon a masterpiece of construction. Thanks again.

If you have the last two letters, lumen, you need a two word noted verb to complete the answer.

I don't know what a 'two word noted verb' means, I'm sorry, that really does not help me.

Lumen, in 32a. the def. is the first 4 words. A clash in the 3rd letter.
