Got it now. Not only had I got 39a wrong (I was not familiar with the musical instruction) but also 31a where I had a plausibly parsed entry.

All done now.

I now only need to find the 2nd word in the NW corner - and I can see one possibility but it doesn't seem consistent with the logic of all the other illustrations. But, then again, the shape of the first word seems more appropriate to one of its alternatives rather than the word itself - which again is inconsistent with my other three illustrations.

Found it!!! Not only is Shark devious, but also a genius. I also would like to cancel all my comments wrt inconsistency in my previous post as that is absolute twaddle.

Thankyou Quisling, as you get closer and closer to the finishing line OCD and sheer determination take over. One last look at the wiki page suddenly illuminated a blinding light for me as the final word I had to find has numerous permutations as to how it can be illustrated. The GWIT, when a genius is asking the question, is rather difficult.

Like many here I spent a while grid staring before (I thought) it all appeared and fell nicely into place.

However I am now seeing a lot of comments regarding there being two words for various of the illustrations, whereas my four illustrations all trace a single word (with the latter two connecting up with the start after following said words as per instructions). Have I missed something obvious?

Bobcat - the preamble states that each illustration traces a thematic word and an item associated with it, so not just a single word

Bobcat, I was in the same boat as you. Keep looking, particularly in the SW, SE and NE, and you should see the theme words. SW was the first one I saw.

Thanks both, I shall persevere. I thought that the lines tracing the single words themselves doubled up as the 'illustrations' of the 'associated items', but I shall review tomorrow and see if it jumps out.
