Hi cass, for 31a the first letter is one of the clashes. The word play is one letter abbreviation for earth + synonym for card. Definition is a a fencing term.

Thanks numbskull ( your pseudonym belies your talents!). I thought a clash would be there (the 3rd one for me). I'd become fixated with 'card' as the def, I should have known better! Now to the end game, hopefully.

29d was my last in; I started on the endgame before solving it, which made it a lot easier

I cannot complete the end-game. I believe I have located the four thematic items items, but finding the associated words is another matter. In the NW quadrant, I could draw another shape within my original diagram, but although it would be symmetrical, its letters do not appear to spell anything significant. I have been looking for synonyms in the other quadrants, but I have not been able to spot anything, so should I be looking for something else?
