I've found two 4 letter words that sort of fit for the fourth illustration. For them to be the appropriate shape the line has to pass through unrelated cells. It doesn't seem right though?

I’ve spent about as long on the fourth illustration as I did on the grid fill and the three other illustrations. Got there in the end though… phew!

Planks. Neither word in the NW is four letters. They are what you would expect them to be. And it’d saved me a whole lot of time if I’d actually looked a bit beyond the NW quadrant

Nearly there... Still can't solve the unches problem. May I have a hint towards the initiator please?

Even with the hints provided so far, this fourth item is doing my head in. Can I just check that one of the words I'm looking for is exactly the word I think it should be based on the associations with the other three I've found, and that the other word I'm looking for isn't the common long version that Wiki tells me about, but a shorter word that means the same thing? I can see the first word in the grid, but the shape I'd have to trace is tortuous to say the least.

Never mind, I found it. I should have asked this question hours ago! :)

2- Runner is a river (a very long one)
3- answer is 4,3. 3 letter mouth + 3 letter abbreviation for without (Italian) + Ordinary ... all reversed. The phrase isn't in Chambers but the second word is.
