Looks like most of us are in the same boat.

I've got the item, I think, but just can't find the thematic word - at least, not in the right place. Is it the one that every source indicates that it should be, to fit with the others??

Thanks quisling. Leaves me even more baffled, unfortunately - the only place I've found it so far isn't fully in the quad, and doesn't give a symmetrical illustration. I guess I'll keep looking.

Do you know what the item looks like, Mauefw?

Yes, I think so - and I've been looking for that shape - but the one I've found goes too far east, and isn't symmetrical when combined with the item. And, to be honest, is a bit of a stretch anyway.

Mauefw. Follow Woodlouse’s suggestion. You will then find 2 possibilities for the associated word. The better symmetry unfortunately leads to a plural. The less good symmetry leads to a word which, under definition 4, whilst in the right area, is of the wrong material! When you get it, you’ll see what I mean.
Nice puzzle, as usual Shark.

Thanks simplesimon & quisling. Cryptic! But makes me think that perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree with the item I've found - if so, it's either a red herring or an unfortunate coincidence.

Maybe I'll come back to it.

Do the identical unches remain identical (eg, two Rs become two Ls) or do they become different letters?
