I have been missing for a while and wonder if I have lost any previous skill. But please can someone enlighten me as to what the numbers written at the side of each clue refer to this week.

As the clues are in alphabetical order of their answers, number 1 is likely to start with A, the clue with 53 could be V, W, X, Y Z - ie near the end of the alphabet.

Isn't it the alphabetical order? So, for example, the first clue in the 6 letter group will begin with A, or close to it.

Yes, Brendan, I could maybe have been clearer - and put 'The clue with 1 beside it is is likely to start A, the one with 53 will be W,X.....' etc. My 'clue 1' might have been ambiguous!

If I could do any of the 9 letter clues I might be able to make a start….sorry

PS My post, given that it appeared after yours, might have looked like it was in reply to it, but it wasn't.

General rule of thumb:- If a post from appears from me at, say, 13:00, then it's a safe bet that I started typing it at least 10 minutes before - then I proof it (I know, you wouldn't think so given some of the garbage I post, but I really do!), edit it, do some copy & paste, re-proof it .... and there you have ie 😉😉

Well, that's 10 minutes I'll never get back 😂

PS I wonder why it is so much easier to see mistakes in the actual submitted post rather than in the pre-submitted one?

Thganks, Brendan. I'm always conscious that posts (often mine) can be interpreted differently - I try to be clear, but don't always succeed. It's often trickier for me if something seems obvious!

I have a full grid (at last) and I think I have the right letters for the coloured squares. This all points to an obvious name, but I'm damned if I can find it except where it's split into two parts. That can't be right, can it?

I 'm not sure if I have the same name as you but there is one obvious one that relates to the colours which look gold, grey, blue and pink to me?
