It's just "runs" I think, as in ______ off

Actually I think it is "runs" as in "manages a department" or similar.

26a - The answer is a name given to a group of languages, including French, and also means a 'fictitious/fabricated narrative/account and, of course, 'love'.

26A, the French language is a group of languages that are called that (also Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian), all derived from Latin.
So it's a double definition.

If it's a double def I think it's weak since romances are not necessarily fabricated. If as Brendan suggests it's intended as a triple I don't see how the plural "fabricated accounts" equates to ROMANCE. So not a very satisfying clue para mi.
