I'm lucky that being non-UK resident I get the international rate of £10 a month. That's not at all bad value for the daily puzzle and the Listener (Jumbo and Mephisto too, though I seldom do them). It's interesting that the Times allows UK subscribers to game the system - perhaps they're feeling the pinch since they set up the paywall?

It looks like this might be the last one for me, so many thanks to tatters and specsaver. Much appreciated.

An interesting post, jack aubrey - one thing I've discovered from reading The Telegraph (a fairly recent decision) is that there is a lot of real news in it that you won't see at all in the newspapers you subscribe to, or even on BBC or ITV News.
We appear to be seeing more and more, ''news we think is good for you'' rather than News, these day (and I worked in media, believe me I know how bad things have become).
On the crossword front, the Observer arrives on my doorstep just for the Azed puzzle - sadly, I have to touch that 'newspaper' to get at it.

drxx - The Guardian and Observer puzzles are the only quality ones I know of that are available free online. And possibly Private Eye, but I haven't done it recently.

Independent and FT puzzles are free online too and both are generally of a high standard. The Indy site is a nightmare though.

All propaganda is free, bobbycollins (the cosswords are just bait). And I do more than touch the Observer, I actually read it (its journalism always fails to impress).

Best not to get into politics drxx, we don't want another row breaking out.

But since you have given the Telegraph a big plug, I will just note that that rag is a pale imitation of what it once was and the reason you find stuff in there that's not in the Times or the BBC is because it prints absolute nonsense that no respectable paper would go near, a prime example being the current Fraser Nelson article currently being quoted by various Tory MPs about how lockdowns don't work, which is based on one of the most laughable, non peer-reviewed 'meta analyses' most experts in the field have ever seen.

Cheers drxx. At my age pretty much all journalism fails to impress. I use my Times subscription for more than the puzzles, but really only enjoy the Sports and occasional Arts pieces. The "opinion" articles often read like sixth form hyperbole and you'd go bonkers if you took them seriously.

Odd that you advise me against getting into politics before you launch into a highly partisan dose of politicking, smellyharry.
I take it you're not interested in where the virus originated, or whether lockdown was strictly necessary, or a host of other snippets of news that might not be good for us to know about (let alone think about).
I don't like crosswords being elevated over the business of a proper newspaper - which is to inform its readership of what is actually happening, not what we'd like to see happen (and for that you really need the hard copy, that's where the detail is).

Come on, boys, this is the Listener thread. If you want to continue discussing politics and newspapers in general, can you please pop across to the Cafe and continue the discussion there. Thanks.
