18 is 3-letter word for seemingly limitless mass (the last letter is extra) + 5-letter word for the buttocks

Thanks Nudd. Enjoyed this and got there with a couple of PDMs on the way. Couldn’t work out wordplay for 1a. 18d took a while to see. Had the grid fill without needing these anyway. One of the across changes gives a name by which my father was known when he was with the Brylcreem boys 39-45.

Help please with the parsing for 2 clues: 23a & 24a.
I've filled the grid, know the statement and coloured the 57. Just these two niggles.

Thanks.

Cass,
23a gathering is a group of people getting together to do a job, eg sewing + single letter abbreviation for 'surface tension'.
24a. The border is what you'd find around a bed base, with the L changed to C.

Thanks Mattrom.

For 23a, my first thought was just that, but for some weird reason I discounted it.
For 24a, I must have had a mental block (or maybe just old age...).

It was interesting reading about the theme, it took me back to studying Aesthetics decades ago and Plato.

Typical Listener - some easy clues, and didn't take too long to fill the grid and decipher the message given by the down clues, but the endgame is annoying.

I know what the shading is meant to show, but I must have missed something about the shading instructions as they don't look very precise. I have a decent approximation to the theme, and 57 shaded cells, but the correct result may be slightly different. As I get older, I don't worry about this so much - I solved the puzzle and enjoyed it.
